The café door shut behind them and the night swallowed them again. Wind chased at the hem of Lucy’s soaked sweater, and she hugged her bag close as Peter unlocked his car.
“Don’t worry,” he said quietly, reading her hesitation. “You can keep the window cracked if you want. I’ll drive slow.”
Lucy nodded, sliding into the passenger seat. The interior smelled faintly of rain and something crisp—mint or eucalyptus. She pressed her knees together, eyes on the windshield.
Peter drove without music. The hum of the engine and the rhythmic sweep of the wipers filled the silence. Streetlights strobed across his face—light, shadow, light again. He didn’t speak, and somehow that was easier.
When they reached an older apartment building, Peter parked beneath a crooked lamp post. “Top floor,” he said, stepping out. Lucy hesitated before following, water squelching in her shoes.
Inside, the stairwell smelled of paint and dust. A faint orange light burned above the last landing. Peter stopped at a door with a fading number 4. He opened it and stepped aside for her to enter first.
The apartment was small but tidy. Books stacked neatly against one wall, a couch draped in a knitted throw, a single lamp casting a soft amber glow. It wasn’t luxurious—but it was quiet, and that alone felt unreal.
“You can take the bedroom,” Peter said, setting down her bag. “I’ll stay out here. Towels are in the closet.”
Lucy blinked, uncertain. “You don’t have to—”
“It’s fine.” He gave a faint smile. “I don’t sleep much anyway.”
She wanted to argue, but the exhaustion hit like a wave. “Thank you,” she whispered instead.
Peter nodded and disappeared into the kitchen. The sound of cupboards opening and water running followed. Lucy found a towel folded on the dresser and changed into an old oversized shirt he’d left out. It hung loosely on her frame, smelling faintly of detergent and rain.
When she stepped back into the living room, Peter had placed a mug of tea on the table. “Chamomile,” he said. “It helps.”
She took it carefully, fingers brushing his for a fraction of a second. Warmth again—too gentle, too safe. “You keep a lot of things that help,” she murmured.
Peter smiled, not answering. He settled onto the couch while she sat at the far end. The television flickered muted images of some late-night show neither of them watched.
After a long silence, Lucy asked, “Why did you stop for me?”
He tilted his head slightly, eyes thoughtful. “You looked like someone I used to know.”
“Who?”
He hesitated, then said, “Someone who needed saving.”
Lucy looked down into her cup. Steam blurred her reflection. “And did you save them?”
“No,” Peter said softly. “But maybe I can do better this time.”
Something fragile in those words pulled at her. Maybe it was the promise. Maybe it was the sadness she heard beneath it.
She wanted to ask more, but her eyelids grew heavy. Peter noticed and stood. “Get some sleep. The room’s yours.”
Lucy nodded, setting down the cup. As she moved past him, she caught his scent again—clean soap and something darker she couldn’t name.
In the bedroom, she lay on the edge of the bed, staring at the ceiling. For the first time in years, no shouting came from behind a door, no footsteps pacing, no threats murmured under breath. Only the sound of rain against the window and the faint creak of Peter settling on the couch outside.
Her mind whispered: Safe.
But another part of her whispered back: For how long?
The lamp dimmed as her eyes closed. Outside, thunder rolled one last time before fading. And somewhere in the living room, Peter sat awake, eyes fixed on the closed door, a quiet smile playing on his lips—gentle, unreadable.
